In his article !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! about the LA Auto Show, Patrick George dropped this little tidbit:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Largely credited to German-born designer Albrecht Goertz, who also penned the stunning BMW 507 and later the Datsun 240Z/Nissan Fairlady Z, the 2000GT echoed many sports cars of its time, including the Jaguar E-Type and others.
You read that correctly: One man, an Herr Albrect Goertz, designed three of the most unassailably beautiful cars of all time: the BMW 507 roadster, the Toyota 2000GT, and the Datsun 240Z.
What are you doing with your life?

Seriously, when I read that I thought "well, that explains my lust for all 3 then"

Huge fan of that guy, also his Silvia is just stunning:

Albrecht Goertz? Away with your familiarity. he was more properly Albrecht Graf von Schlitz genannt von Goertz von Wrisberg. Aristocracy, you see.

This is so beautiful it makes me want to weep.
Buy a real one and restore it to OEM, but while you are doing the restoration, copy and build a full scale replica and swap in an S62 and e39 M5 running gear. (Or if my dimensions are off, swap in and S54 and e46 M3 running gear)

So beautiful. I want one right now.

Holy crap...this. I've always loved the 507 and the Z8, but never thought to marry the two...
BTW, you and I need to be friends. I keep coming across your BMW love around here...

Wouldn't it be great.
Step #1 Use VA loan to build an Icon/Singer style shop focused on restomodding older BMWs
Step #2 Get involved in classic BMW GT car racing
Step #whatever have fun and somehow profit???
In all honesty, I do not own a BMW, YET, but someday soon I will. Doesn't matter how hard it will be to maintain, or how long I have to save up for it (and a new car for the wife, and a house); I'm going to have a stable of M cars one day.
Dream garage:
Fully overlander LR Disco 2 (currently owned, just needs to be finished)
2001 BMW M Coupe' Le Mans Blue
2003 BMW M5 also Le Mans Blue
and then wife's car most likely and Audi

I'm working my way to something similar, but started with the M5.
2001, Carbon Black over Black. 65k miles. In the garage:
And the day I drove it home to MA from VA; rest stop somewhere in Jersey (crappy iPotato edit)
(Please excuse the license plate hack job :P)
I'd love to get an e46 M3, but the combo I want is super rare (Carbon Black over Cinnamon; individual). At some point down the line, an R60/2 is a dream item - but my wife is super against bikes. She'll get over it.

I love your beast dude, she is sooooo puuuurtyyy. I have a funny story about whn I should have bought one.
On the e46 fron though, I know a guy selling a Carbon black over cinnamon.....
convertible. But wait, don't leave. It has Manuel inside. And a proper hardtop shell. The only downside and why I did not buy it when I went to see it several months ago, it has an Active Autowerks supercharger. Nothing wrong with it at all. I'm just not a fan of excessive modifications like that. Low mileage, clean carfax and title, Cali car, 46000 miles.

Hard pass; too many mods. I like my ///M's like I like my women: uncluttered.

Agreed. Don't fault you for that at all. May I ask where you found your beast, and for how much?

I paid above market value a bit: $23k when it had 55,000 miles on it a couple years ago. The guy I bought it from was second owner, enthusiast, and had a *ton* of service records. Even had receipts for oil changes. I got both e39 bentley service manuals, a bunch of spare parts (filters, oil, MAF), a car cover...all sorts of stuff. It was a great deal for me at the time.
My one piece of advice: take your time and find the right car. I had the opportunity to pull the trigger on some other examples, but it wasn't the right color combo nor did it have the full leather dash.
I did 100% of my hunt on m5board.

Actually he really only designed the 507. The 2000GT was designed by a man called Satoru Nozaki and the 240Z by another japanese bloke. Both cars did however incorporate some Goertz styling influences from a failed Nissan sports car prototype which incidentally was called "2000GT" and built in cooperation with, of course, Yamaha back in the early 1960s.
